I want to store my phone numbers on my pc for back up. I have created many contact groups so I also want to back up a record of who is in each group. The contact cards in my phone contain their first name, last name, mobile, telephone and birthday. Some contain 2 mobiles or telephone numbers. Here are the three ways I am considering doing this but I want your advice, which do you think is best?

Hi.
You didn't tell us which phone you have.
But below i will tell you how i do it on my nokia n95 phone and this should be simmilar in other nokia phones as well.
I don't know how it can be done with the iphone or any other models.
You go in the contacts and then you go to options,
You find mark/unmark. This is a submenu so in there you have the option to either mark your current cellection or to mark all your contacts.
If you mark all your contacts then you go to options again and you find copy.
Then you have the option to copy either in your sim card or in your memory card or mas memory. Cellect the memory card or mass memory if your phone hasn't got a memory card.
Now that you copyed all your contacts you can connect your phone on the computer using nokia pc suit.
You go to the nokia phone browser in my computer, you find the model of your phone, then you go to memory card, you find the folder called other, and in there your phone created a folder called contacts.
You can copy the contacts folder anywhere on your computer.
Each contact has a vcf extention and they can be oppened with outlook's address book or any other addressbook program i guess. Even notepad can read them.
I hope i could help but if your phone is not nokia then the instructions above are no use to you. But hopefully they could be use to somebody else.

By the way i don't use groups so i don't know if this method saves your groups as well.
